Homeschooling In Real Life

Homeschooling In Real Life

Do you ever wonder if your homeschooling days look like anyone else's? Homeschooling is very much like being a pioneer..."a person who is among the first to explore or settle a new country or area."  Because each of our families are unique, it truly looks different...

Meet Durenda

I’ve been happily married to Darryl for almost 28 years.  I’m also a mom to eight, ages 12-26 and nana to four sweet grand babies.  I had visions of what a great mom I would be.  After 26 years of mothering, I have come to the conclusion that I will NEVER be that mom, but guess what?  It really doesn’t matter because it really isn’t about me..it’s about living the story that GOD has written for our family…the one that reveals just how awesome and faithful HE really is!

I love to encourage parents by sharing some of the clarity that comes with age, experience and sometimes learning things the hard way.   It’s less important that we look a certain way and more important that we parent and homeschool with the big picture in mind and that happens most readily when we learn to SLOW DOWN.  Being unhurried in our parenting and homeschooling allows us the time and space to be much more intentional.

More about me >

I wanted you all to know that I just published my first book!  It’s a simple, mercifully short book on homeschooling(about an hour long read). Over a year ago, my husband suggested that I write a book on homeschooling.  I laughed because I really did think it was funny!  Homeschooling for our family has been simple, so I doubted that anyone would want to read about it.  My husband told me that was EXACTLY the reason I should write about it.

Four months, an editor and layout designer later, it was published!  Much to my surprise, after two days on Amazon, it was rated #1 in several categories! The most important thing to me, though, is that parents are being encouraged to relax and enjoy these precious years at home with their kids.  If homeschooling isn’t enjoyable most of the time, it might be a good idea to pause and reflect on why.

When His Love Changes Everything

Sharing my devotional over at rachaelcarman.com! "His Word is FULL of scriptures that tell us who we are in Him. I encourage you to write them down and pray them regularly…declare them out loud! Let that knowing in your heart become the place from where you live. It...

Remembering Your Way to Victory

Sunday evening.  What does that mean to you?  Does it invoke feelings of hope or dread? Maybe, like me, you’ve experienced both. It’s the end of the weekend and Monday morning is just one short sleep away. I’m thankful for Sundays.  God knew we would need to hit the...

Girlfriend, You are FREE!

We are on the cusp of moving across the country.  We’ve got one foot in Washington state and one in North Carolina and it’s starting to feel like a S-T-R-E-T-C-H! We spent the last 8 days working and playing in the small town we will be living in.  It was the first...

When God Calls You to Free Fall

My husband and 2 of our boys just left a few days ago on a cross country road trip.  2,471.8 miles.  That alone is enough to make a woman wake up shuddering at the possibilities.  Honestly, I've awakened most mornings lately feeling this way.  There's something about...

Loving Your Man for a Lifetime

Twenty eight years ago, my husband asked me to marry him.  We'd known each other 3 mos, but there was no doubt in either of our minds that God wanted us to be together. He told me he wanted 2...MAYBE 3 kids.  I wanted 10, but thought it best not to divulge that...

When Following God Looks Messy

We sold our dream home almost two years ago now (When God Turns Your World Upside Down).  It was not something I ever saw coming, but in my over 40 year walk with God, He's surprised me more than once.  In fact, that seems to be His speciality...an unexpected...

Less is More When it Comes to Homeschooling

We all have an idea in our heads of what it looks like to "educate" our kids.  Unfortunately it often involves copying the traditional public school setting.  It's important to remember that our kids are not machines and we can put a good amount of trust in their...

Grace: Embracing God’s Gift to You

Did you know that God has special, unique graces for YOU each and every day?  Ones that are made to fit the challenges you face and the circumstances that make up your particular journey? I am writing a devotional once a month for Rachael Carman's devotional blog...

Wisdom for the Road

Between launching kids, moving, my husband's surgeries, and coordinating conferences, it's been difficult to find the time to write here.  Lately, though, things have slowed down and I've started jotting down short devotionals for parents.  Maybe someday I will...
