I’m Durenda Wilson. I’ve been a wife for almost 31 years and a mom for 29 years. I have eight children and 6 grandchildren. I have a word for moms that I think is of the utmost importance.
Our world is quickly changing. There are many things that are out of our control and downright frightening, BUT I want to speak right now to your mom heart:
As an older mom, I have experienced various crises in my life and learned so much from those, but I will admit that I’ve never seen anything quite like this. As I have prayed and prayed and prayed, God has made something very clear to me that I want to convey to you: In spite of everything that’s happening….
YOUR ROLE AS A MOM HAS NOT CHANGED.
Why has it not changed?
Because God is unchanging and your role is God-given, YOUR role is unchanging.
What are you called to?
He has called you to teach your kids to love and serve God. (Deut. 11:18,19)
He has called you to raise your children up in the nurture and admonition of God. (Ephesians 6:4)
He has called you to train them to be disciples of Christ.
Because THESE are God’s priorities, they are OUR priorities.
I am convinced that in order to do this well, we have to have time. We cannot be hurried or overscheduled and that is something that is a constant battle for most moms.
God in His great mercy has given us an opportunity to change that.
Most of the activities and things we have been involved in up to this point have been canceled either temporarily or permanently.
It’s hard to create new habits, but I firmly believe that because our role as moms and parents is SO important, He is taking away distractions that would keep us from truly discipling our children. I am not saying these activities are wrong, but I believe God has a higher purpose in removing them.
But it is imperative that we DON’T LET OTHER THINGS REPLACE THOSE DISTRACTIONS:
It is SO easy to get caught up in all the social media conversations and the news because things are changing every day.
But PLEASE know that even those can be what the enemy uses to keep us from focusing on our most important mission: our families.
It’s imperative that our homes are a refuge. A place that is full of the peace and presence of God. As the world continues to become crazier, our homes can be a place of respite…literally a beacon on a hill.
In the days ahead, our homes may be the ONLY place where our families and others can find calm in the storm. They could very well end up being a powerful place of ministry to God’s people and to the unsaved.
Charles Spurgeon said:
Those who think that a woman detained at home by her little family is doing nothing, think the reverse of what is true…..
Mothers, the godly training of your offspring is your first and most pressing duty.
I firmly believe that God is calling more Christian families to focus on their families, on raising their kids to be strong, godly disciples of Christ.
Moms, if you have not been homeschooling until this quarantine, I strongly urge you to pray hard about taking your kids back from the school system. It’s becoming even more clear that what that system may be offering the next school year is bleak at best.
Do you honestly believe that you can’t do a better job? I guarantee you that you absolutely CAN.
God doesn’t call the “qualified”…He qualifies the called. I firmly believe God is calling many more Christian families to homeschool.
Here’s why: Education is never neutral. SOMEONE is discipling your children.
I always tell families:
Education is discipleship
Discipleship is rooted in relationship
Relationships take time.
We CAN slow down, spend quality time with our kids, loving them, teaching them about Jesus, while also doing some math, reading, and writing, science, and history. In fact, we find God is ALL of these things. But the beauty of home educating is that we can do it using the sources and the pace that WE find out is best for our kids!
I have a simple, mercifully short book on homeschooling called, “The Unhurried Homeschooler” that I wrote based on our over 24 years of home educating our kids.
It’s about a 1 ½ hour read and it will give you so much encouragement and it will help you get a fresh and freeing perspective on schooling your kids at home.

I also have a podcast loaded with encouragement called The Durenda Wilson Podcast
