As moms, we are buckling under the weight of unmet expectations. We are bombarded with messages about what kind of mom, wife, and woman we are supposed to be.
In our heart of hearts, we know we are human and that we are weak and it’s that little bit of truth that the enemy uses to sell us a lie that has the potential to do great damage to ourselves and to our families.
The lie is that we will never be enough or do enough. We constantly feel like we fall short of the ideals that we believe would help us feel good about what we are doing and give us the assurance that our kids are going to be ok.
You see, the enemy KNOWS we care deeply about our children. We love them more than life itself and truly want the very best for them at all costs. So he takes that God-given desire and he effectively uses it against us.
Our deep love for our children often drives us to fear. We worry about all the things concerning them. When our head hits the pillow at night in hopes for some peace and rest, we instead find ourselves ruminating over all the ways we failed that day. The judge sits behind the desk, brings down the gavel and yells, “GUILTY!” Our hearts sink and tears stream down our cheeks. As we drift off into an exhausted sleep, at best, we whisper a prayer for forgiveness and help to do better tomorrow. At worst we feel unworthy to even ask.
We are engaged in a war whether we want to be or not. If you are a Christian mom you have a target on your back. The enemy knows that you have a sphere of influence that has the potential to bring down the powers of darkness. There is power in a strong, cohesive godly family and he will stop at nothing to render you as ineffective as possible. He hurls accusations to discourage you so that you will buckle under the weight of condemnation.
Let me clarify: Contrary to what the world tells us, as humans, we are in fact, weak and essentially powerless. Eve fell for the lie that she could become like God, but we have to recognize that this is our battle as well: to try and BE God. It was what got Satan kicked out of heaven and now he’s trying to get us to fall for the same deception.
Motherhood awakens something in us that is unlike anything else. We love our children more than we ever thought we could love someone. It’s what God effectively uses to encourage us to lean even harder into Him so we can experience Him in very real, powerful and life-changing ways. But it’s also what the enemy uses to try to bring us to destruction.
Jesus says this about the enemy in John 10:10“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.”
So this motherhood thing? It’s a battle of epic proportions. If we aren’t intentional in waging it effectively, the loss is monumental.
Proverbs 14:1 says this:
“The wise woman builds her house,
but with her own hands, the foolish one tears hers down.”
We are called as moms to be life GIVERS. God has given us the ability to bring life or death into our own homes.
Please don’t read condemnation here. This isn’t another demand that’s being made on you. That’s the thing we often don’t realize about God: He is a burden LIFTER.
Jesus speaks directly to our burdens in Matthew 11:28-30:
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
Jesus wants us to give our heavy, ill-fitting burdens to him and he wants to lay upon us a yoke that is bearable.
What does that look like? How can we as moms bring life to our families?
First of all, it’s essential that we are meeting with Jesus regularly. That may look different in the various seasons of motherhood. Sometimes that is literally getting to sit and be quiet with him. Sometimes it’s quieting or pouring out our hearts as we drive our van full of kids, fold laundry, do dishes, watch the kids play in the yard, or make dinner.
Secondly, we need to meditate on the truth of God’s word. Quantity is great, but consistency is what matters. Keep His word at the forefront of your mind.
Jesus wants to disciple us (walk alongside us) and show us how to walk in unforced rhythms of grace and as that happens, we, in turn, disciple our children. He models it in our relationship with Him and we follow His example.
It’s not heavy, it’s not overbearing. It’s organic. The definition of organic is “related to or derived from living matter.” Jesus is LIFE.
Oswald Chambers said, “All that is required is to live a natural life of absolute dependence on Jesus Christ.” That’s it. Everything revolves around this truth.
But don’t think the enemy is going to let you do that without putting up a fight. He will send every distraction he can. He will tempt you to compare yourself to others to make you feel faint-hearted, weak and hopeless.
But now you know the truth. Jesus said, “You shall know the truth and the truth will set you free.”(John 8:32) And, “Whom the Son sets free is FREE INDEED”! (John 8:36)
Wage this war letting Jesus help you walk in the freedom that is yours! Remind yourself and the enemy that he does NOT get to run the show.
And stay alert:
“Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. This is how you can recognize the Spirit of God: Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, but every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you have heard is coming and even now is already in the world.
You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world. They are from the world and therefore speak from the viewpoint of the world, and the world listens to them. We are from God, and whoever knows God listens to us; but whoever is not from God does not listen to us. This is how we recognize the Spirit of truth and the spirit of falsehood.”
1 John 4:1-6
So go. Go home and love your family with all that is in you and in the ways that God calls you. The stakes are high. The enemy is an insidious snake.
“But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ”!
